Caregiving is full of stressful situations. If you work to make yourself resistant to that stress, you'll be able to navigate those situations so much more easily. Luckily this means making some small changes that can yield big results.
Sleep Well as Often as Possible
Sleep is one of the best tools in your arsenal as a caregiver. You need to be getting enough sleep, first of all, and it also needs to be good quality sleep. This means you're not tossing and turning and when you wake up, you feel refreshed. If this isn't happening, you might need to talk to your own doctor about what's going on. Other lifestyle changes can help.
Eat Healthy Foods Regularly
What you eat impacts every aspect of your life. You need to put healthy foods into your body and they will in turn support everything that you do. Avoid too much caffeine, sugar, and salt. If there are other foods or ingredients that you know don't do well with your body, then it's time to cut back on those. Changing your diet isn't easy, but it makes a huge difference.
Move, Move, Move
The human body needs to move a little bit every day. Even if what you're doing is taking the stairs more often or parking farther away in the parking lot that counts. Find little ways to move a little bit more every day. Before long, you'll be moving far more than you used to.
Pay Attention to Your Vices
Vices are great coping mechanisms, but they're often really unhealthy. Drinking too much alcohol or smoking cigarettes can lead to long-term health issues. Find ways to replace those bad habits with much better habits as quickly as you can.
Give Yourself an Outlet
You can't just focus on being a caregiver. Your senior may need a lot of help, but that doesn’t mean that helping is all that you do. If you don't have any outlet for yourself, like a hobby or other activity you enjoy, you need to find one. The sooner you do, the more stress you can put behind you.
You may never completely get rid of stress, but you can make it not part of your personal environment. When that happens, stress doesn't tend to stick around very long at all. Some of these tips may take some time to kick in, so don't give up too soon.
