About a third of the adult population in the United States are caregivers for another adult. Being a caregiver is undoubtedly rewarding, but it can also be incredibly stressful. Anyone who is a caregiver can experience caregiver stress, but women and people who take care of a spouse are the most likely to be affected. Still, it’s important for all caregivers to find ways to prevent or relieve stress. Below are 5 ideas for caregivers to use to help them relax.
#1 Take Up a Hobby
Okay, you may not feel like you have time to engage in a hobby but doing so can give you something to take your mind off your worries. If you have a hobby that you’ve been neglecting, try picking it up again. Or, try something completely new. Hobbies give your hands and brain something to do besides thinking about what’s next on your “to do” list.
#2 Get a Massage
The stress of being a caregiver can lead to tense muscles that ache. Schedule yourself a massage to work out those kinks and knots. If you’re concerned about taking time away from your older family member, hire a home care provider to sit with them while you relax and enjoy yourself.
#3 Have Coffee with Friends
Caregivers often neglect their personal relationships. They may be too busy to make the time, or they may simply feel exhausted and disconnected. But, times when you’re dealing with life’s difficulties, like caregiving, are the times when you need your friends the most. When you are setting up your weekly schedule, be sure to block off some time to spend with your friends, even if it’s just half an hour to chat over coffee.
#4 Practice Yoga
Experts recommend that caregivers take steps to protect their own health instead of focusing solely on the health of the person they care for. One way you can do that is to get more exercise. Yoga is often touted for its health benefits as well as for its ability to relieve stress and put you in a more relaxed state of mind. Most communities have a local yoga studio or classes offered through a gym. However, you can also use an online video or a DVD.
#5 Read a Book
Reading is a relaxing activity because it allows you to lose yourself in a story. For a time, you can forget about the health of your loved one while getting engrossed in the plot. Reading also gives you a few minutes to rest, sitting in your favorite chair or lying in bed.
